Position Overview

The Managing Editor will work in collaboration with the Editor of Food Business News to produce an every other week print publication. This role will contribute compelling content for online, print and custom projects. The Managing Editor will also have coverage responsibility at industry events and trade shows, requiring some travel.

Responsibilities:
    • Research and identify news and industry topics to develop timely and appropriate content for daily website news and each print issue
    • Review and edit daily content
    • Generate ideas for feature stories based on industry events, trends and coverage relevance
    • Work with editorial staff to maintain quality and timely flow of content for the website and print magazine
    • Assist with editorial staff management, to include overall staff development and advancement (in collaboration with Editor)
    • Set and maintain schedules and deadlines for editorial assignments and custom projects
    • Work in collaboration with designer to organize the weekly publication
    • Travel to trade shows/conferences and other industry events for the purpose of generating copy, networking and establishing credibility with industry leaders
    • Assist in special projects or analysis requests from the editorial staff
    • Manage invoices for contributing editors/freelancers

Education and experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field
    • 7+ years journalism experience
    • Knowledge of B2B food industry a plus
    • Willingness and ability to travel (5-8 times per year)

Position Overview

This position is tasked with providing creative solutions as assigned for editorial print products, in-house advertising creation for print publications, design and production of ezines, digital ads and other special projects that are companion pieces to parent publication, promotional material or other projects as assigned.

Responsibilities:
    • Collaborate with design and editorial teams in a positive and proactive manner to explore unique, interesting, and professional design solutions for use in print editorial, print promotions and online components
    • Execute production or creative projects as assigned to meet deadlines, support fellow designers, and allow for a balanced workload within the design team.
    • Honor requests from Editorial/Sales/Circulation/Digital/Promotion departments as assigned by the Design Manager.
      Maintain and distribute publication ladders and production updates in a timely and efficient manner as needed.
    • Monitor digital design trends, suggest execution opportunities, and implement when approved.
    • Ensure proper brand usage, quality of design, integrity of images and adhere to minimum image standards of quality and size for print and digital implementation.
    • Attend and contribute to weekly marketing promotions/design meetings.
    • Participate in QC reviews, proofing and correction processes and trafficking of pages as needed.
    • Maintain design style and procedure as noted in Process and Procedure (P&P) files as well as update and maintain P&P files monthly.
    • Contribute to the Design Inspiration and Learning repository with design ideas, software tips, tricks, updates and more.
    • Take pride and have respect in the company’s products, services, processes, policies, and all other departmental contributions. Adhere to company standards, workflows, naming protocols, network organization and deadlines.
    • Follow proper form submissions, record status updates, and maintain consistent communication regarding project progress to all contributors and departments.
    • Honor editorial, advertising, and promotions deadlines. Abide by all publication/marketing schedules – coordinate with other team members, shows and their travel, etc. as necessary.
THe ideal candidate:
    • Strong knowledge of print production including prepress, terminology, typography and color theory
    • Attention to detail and quality control standards, proofreading skills, and preflight knowledge
    • Ability to execute clean layouts
    • Capacity to create visual data stories
    • Qualified to manipulate and color correct photography as needed
    • Understand the B2B publication industry, subject matter specific to publications, the audience and how to design specific to that demographic.
    • Ability to multitask and address issues in a professional, and confident manner
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills
    • Considerate and timely communication skills
    • Ability to collaborate well in a team setting
    • Ability to work remotely
Education and experience
    • College degree in graphic design or related field
    • 3-5 years of print design experience; preferably in magazine production
    • Advanced level Adobe Creative Suite software user, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
    • Knowledge of Adobe Animate and Premiere Pro is a plus
    • Competency in a PC computer environment
    • Intermediate Microsoft Office software user
    • Experience with multimedia/digital content creation including basic animation techniques (HTML, HTML5, CSS – Experience with interactivity a PLUS)
    • Ability to create interactive charts, graphs, and maps
    • Implementing Tracking Codes
    • Integrating Interactive Elements with Websites (these can include chat rooms, discussion forums / message boards, contact forms, order forms / shopping carts, and appointment calendars)
    • Capable of integrating interactivity into flipbooks
